I am very surprised that there is only 13 fellow students that play golf.  I would think we would have at leasr 40 golfers signed up for Sept 25th golf scramble at Dad Millers, across the street from Savanna High.  If you play golf and have not signed up please do so by Aug. 24.  It should be a fun day for everyone.  You don;t have to be a good golfer, I will be there to make you look good.

I agree with Jack -- there must be more than 13 golfers out there.  I played the Dad Miller golf course for the first time in 50 years on the Sunday after our last committee meeting.  50 years ago there were no trees and the clubhouse was a metal shed.  I know we'll have a fun day on the course, and Mike has arranged a nice lunch for us.  We will be done in plenty of time to make it to the Meet and Greet at 4:00.

On another subject, Skip Johnson and Mitch Wise commented on my profile page about the hard work the reunion committee was doing during the posted video.  I can assure everyone that we were all participating in our Beach Party conditioning program, intended to assure we will make it to the party's 10:00 p.m. ending.  With the exception of Steve Braden, we are all on track to acheive that goal.  I know that Steve would appreciate any encouragement that you might have.

See you all soon!

John,

I spoke to Mr Szarek on the phone week before last.  Wonderful experience reminiscing with him.  Still a wonderful guy.  He seemed to enjoy our conversation a lot.

For some of us, it is hard to stay up past 9, so I will make sure we keep some coffee going for Steve.  Now that we are in France and getting used to the lifestyle, dinner does not start until 7:30, so we are able to be up till 9:30 Ha Ha.

I know exactly what you mean Mitch. A meal almost anywhere I have been in Europe lasts at least 2 hours and often even longer.

Linda,

I too, looked and found a number of HASTINGS; but, my search also yielded many a variation of the Coach's first and last name. I started out running for him as a sophomore then when I messed my neck up in a car accident  that summer while coming back from the beach with George Lybarger, I ended up being the team manager.

George also tried to teach me how to toss the shot, and, throw the javelin. Was never very good at anything but baseball and kicking a football. Our team already had a kicker, so I didn't even try out. I probably should've. I guess we all have a bunch of should'ves in our closets.

I really liked the Coach. Until you all said something about his being a classroom teacher, I was not aware that he did anything but coach. My small world of thinking I guess. I do a lot of "guessing." LOL! Micah.

Did we have two Don(ald) Williams at school in 1965? If so, this I did not know. Micah.

Thank you Micah, for the information. Yes, Mr. Hastings also taught government. He was a wonderful teacher.

This reunion is shaping up to be something extraordinary.  If you're still waiting to register.  Wait no longer and be embraced by your classmates in September!

If you have room for another golfer I can get up at 4:00 am to make it to OC by 7:30 from Temecula

So for a bit of fun,  it appears a few of us enjoyed the Mecca, the blue beat, etc,  So in a paraphrase of Joe and Eddie,  not a meeting, but, " We've got a party to night, I can tell by your smiling face, we've got a party tonight, Time to sign up is coming soon.  As Steve has pointed out, this is a one in a lifetime event,  So make plans to see old friends, and meet new friends at our reunion party.

Hi Mitch, This is a great connection for so many of us.  I hope those super "invitational" lyrics  will encourage more to sign up.  A party is only a party if people show up!!!

I know a bit corny, but maybe?  At 90 your efforts are looking good.  BTW,  try "dimples" as a clue to my tease.

That's great Mitch. I loved Joe and Eddie and all those others you mentioned and certainly remember "the Meetin' here tonight!" I truly believe it will be a most memorable event with a good time had by all.

Mitch your right.  The Mecca was my go to place, great shows plus small intimate seating.  Joe & Eddy, Hoyt Axton, The Dillards and so many more.  That & the Prison of Socrates both now gone made for many enjoyable evenings.

Unbelievably, the Blue Beet in Newport is still there since 1912.  Great live performances and just a fun place to hang.  Too bad so many of the coffee houses we enjoyed have gone by the wayside.  We can't even find a good place to go dancing anymore.

Mr. Szarek was my most influential teacher in High School and even in my whole life. He was my English Literature teacher and he was able to bring the readings alive. He would dance across the room with his pointer as he acted out Hamlet, asking us pointed questions which we were always prepared to answer. Or he celebrated the profound love of Alexander Pope in his Poem, The Rape of the Lock. Mr. Szarek placed seeds in me which ultimately bore fruit when I started to write poetry some 35-years later. I remember the precise location and all of the sensations as I crafted that first poem in my mind and was worried I might lose it for I had nothing to write it down. I can lay responsibility for all of my writing and reading at the feet of my true mentor. Blessings.

Wow.  That's a wonderful testimony, Bob.  Mr. S and his teaching had a permanent impact on me as well.

You guys were so lucky. I had Mr. Rawlings my senior year. Oh my gosh he was such a stickler for everything.

Of course I suppose his exceedingly boring grammar lessons stuck, as even today I see a dangling participle and cringe. :)  I had a long talk with Coach Hastings today and he is delighted that so many of us remember him. He will be signing up on the web site soon so you can all communicate with him. Would you believe he still skiis? And I'll bet he is pretty darn good at it. At Savanna he was quite the surfer.

I see we now have an extended sign up date for food but not for pictures. Don't you just love a moving target? Meanwhile I made a bit of progress today. I want a new engine mod for my bike before I make the 2000+ miles trip and I now have it set up to happen the first day I am on the road. A few hours from home is the recognized expert at such things for my bike brand so I have an appointment for 21 Sept to install it on my bike. In theory it will improve the fuel economy a bit and give me more low end power. I don't need the power but will like getting a few extra miles per gallon for my 4200 miles round trip to Newport. Many people are clueless about the Victory product line so here is a picture of me on my bike. I have made a few appearance changes since this picture was taken.
