Yes Karen.  No question this aging Hamlet nerd needs to see Something Rotten.

All of your choices were good ones.  A Chorus Line was one of my favorites along with Wicked.

Hamilton is currently playing at the Segerstrom Center.  I am hoping to get a Rush ticket before it leaves town. Off to Maui tomorrow.  Aloha!

I think This is one of the the best things about being retired; having the time to go to the theatre whenever you want, even on school nights!!!   :)  Excellent List Mike and the other metnioned plays are all wonderful and I would add West Side Story and Man of LaManchaJust saw Hamilton on Tuesday night and while it was brilliant and revolutionary, and featured a top notch cast,  it was not my all time favorite. I have enjoyed all the shows mentioned above and I love how those lists get us all thinking, but my very favorite all time musical would have to be Les Miserables which I have seen 19 times (mainly because I brought by students to see it whenever it came to town or when I took them to London) It touches your heart and soul. And yes, Karen, Something Rotten is fantastic! So hilarious. I can't remember laughing that hard at a musical before. Even funnnier than Spamalot. No one mentioned Dear Evan Hansen and while it doesn't feautre the memorable Rogers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe type sing along score, it is a poignant and profoundly touching musical that reflects the times in which we now live. You probably won't leave the theatre humming one of the songs, but it will make you so grateful for our years at Savanna in a simpler, happier time.

Just a reminder to please take a moment today to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedoms of our great country.  I see there have been an number of discussions on our website about favorite movies.  In light of today's special meaning,  I encourage everyone to look up and view "Taking Chance" - a 2009 HBO film about the return of the remains of a fallen Marine.  It is a moving reminder of the honor due these fine Americans on this Memorial Day.

Hey folks, I happen to play tuba in The Fullerton Community Band (I'm *still* learning!) and we're putting on a free concert Saturday in the quad at Fullerton College (better known as FJC to us, I'm sure).  We do three of these outdoor summer gigs yearly and quite a few people attend...a great opportunity to spread out a blanket, do some niblets, or tote a couple of folding chairs, relax and listen to a bunch of folks who never stopped playing!  Downbeat is 6 PM, parking close by on Chapman and Lemon, or just north of Chapman on campus.  Hope to see a few of you hardy souls!

Charlie, that's really cool that you are part of the Fullerton Community Band.  If I didn't live so far away, I would certainly attend.  I read a bit about the FCB on their website, and it seems like it may well be a semi-pro,  volunteer band.  Very impressive.  Sorry I don't know this, but did you play the tuba in high school?  If so, did you keep on playing the tuba after high school (probably difficult to find a practice location)?  In any case, congrats on high level musical skills and performance.

Wow! Charlie I didn't know you played the Tuba. Sadly we have plans for this Saturday night but keep us posted as to when you other performances will be. Break a leg!!!

I remember you as a trombone player & probably the funniest member of the SHS band.

Richard, der tuba is a followup to playing contra-bass bugle in Drum and Bugle Corps (various throught the years)...I *did* play trombone in the band at Savanna, along with drums when marching around.  I'm about 5 years into the present quest of mastering the instrument...prolly need 20 more!  ;0)

Charlie, thanks for the follow-up to my questions.  Only 4 years playing the tuba, it is impressive that you are playing in a high-level band.  Of course, when you started playing the tuba, you were not a musical beginner, you brought all of your experience over many years playing other wind instruments as well as the sense of rhythm from playing the drums.  The tuba is obviously a substantially different instrument, with the large tubes required to produce the long wave lengths of the low frequencies.  I would guess that means that more air (breath) is required to drive sound from the tuba.  I suppose that in addition to thinking about being musical and producing the "song", you need to worry about getting enough air into you and then sending it out to the tuba in manner that accomplishes your musical goals.

My wife and I are amateur fingerstyle guitarists.  I have played for a number of years, but I know I will never master the instrument.  None the less, playing the guitar is very absorbing and when the music actually emerges, it can be quite rewarding.

...can't say enough about how playing an instrument, pretty much *any* instrument, and attempting to be competent at it, is good for the soul...not to mention the brainwork required to read music and be in tune with others.  So, stay with your finger-pickin' Richard...quite the satisfying activity!

Dear Charlie,

You are so right about playing an instrument. All Life has Vibration and Harmony. The Instrument name has another application as a Tool of Measurement and Balance. WE are Instruments, with manifold applications, my Friend...

Time Gets Better With Age

Read it through to the end, it gets better as you go!

I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting new people,
And doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. Age 65

I've learned that whenever I decide something with kindness, I usually make the right decision. Age 66
*
I've learned that everyone can use a prayer. Age 72
*
I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. Age 74
*
I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch - holding hands, a warm hug,
Or just a friendly pat on the back.    Age 76
*
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. Age 78
*
I've learned that you should pass this on to someone you care about. Sometimes they just need a little something to make them smile.

If Things Get Better With Age Then I'm Approaching Excellent.
