So Mike, I felt with my minor challenge you would have come back with about 20 great songs from movies. We head off for Lisbon and Porto in the near future, then Jan will be haveing some foot surgery that will keep us Bordeaux bond for a while.  I understand she will be in the apartment for at least 4 weeks. Boot, crutches, etc.  I better practice being nice.

How about bringing some of these ideas to breakfast tomorrow at 9:30 AM at Keno's, 2661 LaPalma in Anaheim. Love to see you there.

Kathleen Daulton (Dacey)

How about Spin and Marty on The Micky Mouse Club show?

Sky King was one of my favorites.   "Sky" had a  cool airplane, Songbird,  that could seed the clouds to rain and also help find people in distress as well as crimals and spies from the air. Wow!

Kathleen, I'd forgotten about Sky King but not about Sky's niece Penny. Jimmy Buffett and I both had crushes on her.

She was taken.  Had a boyfriend, another Jimmy in the show.

How about The Westerner, High Chaparral, The Big Valley, and The Virginian.

Mike, it sounds like you were so taken in by the "drama" you forgot it was a written script...there's still a chance!  Hahaha, every time I see a Beechcraft I think of this show...although, upon some YouTubing, I find the airplane was actually a Cessna T-50...lol...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I0xwm8J814

I don't know if Monte Montana had a t.v. show but he was a great rodeo rider.  He came to our school in Manhatten Beach and did a show for us when I was in the 2nd grade.  At the time it was very exciting.  He rode very fast and did rope tricks on our school playground.  I so wanted a horse after that.  I read all the Walter Farley horse books and begged my dad to let me have a horse.  He said if one ever came into our back yard that I could keep it.  My dad was funny.

Did we mention Roy Rogers and Dale Evans?  His  palmino, Trigger, was beautiful! Andy Divine and Gabby Hayes often appeared on the show. Andy drove a jeep, Nellie Bell.  Hence the phrase, "Whoa, Nellie Bell!". Roy Rogers was known as the "Singing Cowboy".

My dad's military training was at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell New Mexico.  He was trained as an equestrian soldier.  He owned and trained horses including cutting ponies most of his adult life.  He loved everything western.  We watched a lot of cowboy shows and movies on t.v.  Most of us are too young to remembet him but Tom Mix was his first favorite cowboy.  Those old reruns were always part of our t.v. time.

Not sure if it qualifies as a western (it was western Tennessee) how about Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone.

Fess Parker starred in both. Speaking of which, if you haven't been, Fess Parker has a very nice winery in Los Olivos.

Thanks Gregg,  had the Davy Crockett song running thru my head for about a day.  Had to start singing other songs to get it to leave.

The teachers always were smarter:

Four high school boys afflicted with spring fever skipped morning classes.
After lunch they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tire.
Much to their relief she smiled and said, "Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper."
Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: "First question: Which tire was flat?"
In Mike's spirit, best excuse you ever used for skipping class

The next genre for Mike's list of personal favorites is Film Noir.  You know, those dark, slightly cynical films with the Sam Spade type detective at the heart of the story and at least one fascinating female interest to help motivate Sam and please audiences.  So here we go:

  • M (Fritz Lang/Peter Lorre)
  • The Maltese Falcon
  • Double Indemnity
  • Farewell My Lovely
  • The Postman Always Rings Twice
  • Mildred Pierce
  • The Third Man
  • Chinatown
  • Body Heat
  • L.A. Confidential

LA Confidential one of my all time favorites.

BREAKING NEWS! Had to share this with my classmates. I know I'll sleep better tonight knowing it.

Breakfast in bed old people style.  I wonder who made the tray?  The sweet resident care giver I'm sure.

Next subject.  My favorite film noir is "Blood Simple" (1984) with Francis McDormand by the Coen brothers.  It was sooo crazy dark in some places it made me laugh.  "Body Heat" is on the top of my list.  It gave me chills when William Hurt caught his breath while in his prison bunk as he realized she was alive!

Joan Elliott (Euans)

Mike Elliott, funny you should mention Mildred Pierce. Definitely a well-known Film Noir. You reminded me that this was a required assignment of feminist interpretation in my Women's Studies class at Ohio State. We should discuss it sometime.
