I love the Hawaii Five-O theme. And did you know an updated version of that TV show is still on? It's very good and when I hear that theme I'm right back over on the Islands. It's a dream vacation.

Good call, Jack, on Rawhide.  The theme song was great with the sound of a whip and  "Keep them doggies rollin"... But who could forget Rowdy Yates?!!!

Michael Elliott

Yes Kathleen, and who had any idea back then that Eastwood's role as Yates launched one of the most enduring and creative careers in the film industry.

Rawhide theme was eveh honored in the Blues Bros.

Even though we only got the instrumental version on television, the theme from M*A*S*H is one that sticks in my head. Of course I watch 2-3 episodes nightly. Factoid that may interest only me: The song (lyrics) was written by the 14 year old son of director Robert Altman. Robert Altman said that while he only made $70,000 for having directed the movie, his son had earned more than $1 million for having co-written the song.

Mitch - Yes, those paragons of taste and musical rip-offs, Jake and Elwood, do an interesting version of Rawhide, in a scene with a very rowdy country bar and the band behind the modest protection of some chicken wire.  But Blues Brothers play Rawhide only after they start singing one of their more usual blues numbers which is met with a barrage of beer bottles from the audience.  The manager shuts off the lights and the band has to do something to save the gig (and maybe avoid a worse outcome).  To appeal to their country audience, the Blues Brothers play Rawhide.

For what it is worth, the Peter Gunn theme appears as background music about midway through the Blues Brothers film when Jake and Elwood are sitting in the Bluesmobile.  The theme from Peter Gunn then appears frequently throughout the remainder of the film as sort of the unofficial theme song of the film.

Greg, I am not surprised that the TV version of the M*A*S*H theme is instrumental, after all, suicide is a sensitive topic which many people are not very comfortable discussing.  So the TV version ditched the words.

Interesting and surprising that Robert Altman reported that his son made a million dollars for writing the lyrics.   As the lyrics aren't used for the TV version, his son presumably didn't earn anything from use of the song in the TV show and the many years of reruns.  While there must have been sales of the movie sound track and royalties from use of the sound track, a million bucks seems like it might be a bit of hyperbole.  I suppose not everything people say on late night talk shows is 100% true.

Richard, you know how Dads liie to brag about their kids.   But agree that is a lot of $$ when the lyrics were only used in the movie, on the other hand, how many times has the movie been shown on TV world wide, and as you say DVD, Tapes, etc might have sold in the millions from the original film.  Hard to say.

Wow.  You guys are way better than Wikipedia.  Love these discussions over factoids.  Great fun.

Karen brought up "Laverne and Shirley" which made me think, that no one brought up one of my favorites,         " Happy Days".

Mitch, regarding the mascot. According to my pal Jerry LaBuda it's going to remain rebels but the soldier will be replaced by a Yosemite Sam type character. Apparently someone has an in with Disney and they are working on it. It will probably be similar to the "running rebel" which is the mascot for UNLV. And a another factoid: His name is Beauregard.

Jack, great idea best James Bond themes?

02/25/18 08:03 AM #966

Michael Elliott

You guys read my mind.  Thought about doing this some time ago.  Obviously great Rebel minds think alike.

Favorite Bond movie themes:

Goldfinger (Shirley Bassey)

From Russia With Love (Matt Monro)

Thunderball (Tom Jones)

You Only Live Twice (Nancy Sinatra)

Nobody Does It Better (Carly Simon)

Skyfall (Adele)

I acknowledge my personal taste tilt toward earlier bond films and Bond divas.

So Mike, I felt with my minor challenge you would have come back with about 20 great songs from movies. We head off for Lisbon and Porto in the near future, then Jan will be haveing some foot surgery that will keep us Bordeaux bond for a while.  I understand she will be in the apartment for at least 4 weeks. Boot, crutches, etc.  I better practice being nice.
