Phil, I'm going to steal that tidbit. It will cut the distance between my age and golf score in half (at least).

To me the only thing scarier than going back to algebra would be going back to dating.

You're so right about dating.  I'm with Charlie on algebra.  Along with plane geometry, the only math I liked. Never had it better in my life than right now.  Except when my 3 grown kids were in the cribs and didn't drive, go out, or leave the house til we took them to school.

More thoughts on growing older:

• The older you get, life in prison is less of a threat! (Thanks to Steve B. for that one.)
• You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.
• I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.
• One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it's such a nice change from being young.
• One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been.
• Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable and relaxed.
• If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you're old.

Bob, stay safe. We have family in Chapel Hill don't know if that's in the path.

Mike, that photo is at Pinehurst and the statue of Payne Stewart sits behind the 18th green at Pinehurst No. 2. Interesting note for fellow golfers. Every Sunday on Pinehurst 2 the pins are placed in the same places they were in 1999 when Payne won the US Open there.

I don't have enough game to play that course but we did have lunch there and I bought the requisite hat and T-shirt. They just opened a Par 3 course (Cradle) that is open to the public. I might have enough game for that course.

Thanks, friends. Chapel Hill is 8 miles away from Us in Durham. We have been very fortunate in this storm, as it brushes us while battering the coast and south and east of us, presumably including Pinehurst. It is a very large storm and the rains will continue for a few days, but comparatively light fall for us. Hurricane Fran in 1996 was much more destructive here in the Triangle—Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. The Outer Banks always get hit hard, of course.

Greg, thanks for filling in the gaps for me regarding your Pinehurst visit.  There's also a great statue of Payne Stewart in Waterville, Republic of Ireland.  No doubt he's an icon there too.

Bob, glad to hear you missed the brunt of Florence. We now know our family in Chapel Hill is OK.

Mike, I actually had a run-in with Payne Stewart in 1997. It's would take too long to relate the whole story but the Reader's Digest version has to do with Payne Stewart, my cell phone, the 16th hole on a Saturday at the Byron Nelson tournament in Texas and a bogey on a driveable par 5.
